Her distinctive impressionist paintings in oil and watercolor are marked by vivid color, many depicting the landscape of the Cape and Nantucket, where she spent many summers, painting from nature and in the towns. Janet exhibited her work widely at galleries and art shows, as well as her gallery in Yarmouthport and received many awards. She taught classes in portraiture and painting at Cape Cod Art Association and the Creative Arts Center in Chatham, and others. She had studied piano as a child and taught herself to play many difficult classical pieces, with Chopin being a favorite. When her children were older, she resumed her studies, receiving a BFA degree in 1972. Janet showed a talent for drawing and painting at a young age, and after graduating from Brockton High School in 1949, studied at Massachusetts College of Art. Former wife of the late Robert Ames Gilmore of North Easton MA. Born in Brockton Massachusetts, the daughter and only child of Charles Wesley Skinner and Eugenia Barnes Skinner. Janet Skinner Gilmore, 91, passed away peacefully at Cape Cod Hospital in Hyannis, MA on Wednesday, October 5, 2022. ![]()
